About the ICA

About the Independent Communicators Alliance

Connecting talent...achieving results.

Our slogan points to why ICA exists – to connect talented professional communicators with organizations that are searching for the results clear communications can deliver.

Our story is also linked to a changing world.

Traditionally, most professional communicators worked as employees of large organizations. Or they worked for large advertising or PR agencies that served those organizations. Today, however, more and more communicators are choosing to work independently, as owners of their own firms.

Organizations are also facing change.

The marketplace is more crowded than ever, and organizations of every size realize it's harder to get their message out. Therefore, organizations are trying to find the professional writers, editors, graphic designers, video producers and marketing consultants who can help them succeed in today's busy world.

The History of the Independent Communicators Alliance

Founded in April 2004 in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Triangle area of North Carolina, the Independent Communicators Alliance (ICA) is an association of experienced, independent communication professionals who provide writing, editing, graphic design, multimedia, audiovisual, public relations, marketing, advertising, organizational development and related services. ICA started life several years earlier as a smaller, special interest group within the Triangle chapter of IABC (International Association of Business Communicators). Then known as FIND (Freelancer and Independents Network), the group would meet for fellowship and to share tips for doing business on one's own. Over time, several members partnered together on projects, and employers began turning to the group to find communicators for projects.

Today, ICA has evolved into a stand-alone organization that benefits many people, the members who come together to network and support one another, and organizations who need to find a professional communicator for short or medium term projects.

The ICA Mission

The mission of the Independent Communicators Alliance is to provide our members with networking, peer education and support opportunities, while also striving to enhance the work lives and elevate the image of independent communicators. ICA serves as a link between businesses, organizations and individuals with communication needs and our professional members by collectively and assertively promoting our members' services.
