Website Content Management: Four Top Tools For Doing It On Your Own

Google is attracted to websites with changing content and thanks to Content Management Systems, you don't have to be a technical guru to create new content, modify it and remove it from your website. There's no longer a reason to risk having search engines pass you by because you have old content at your site.

During this meeting, Jeff VanDrimmelen, a web developer and instructional technologist at UNC-CH, will explain the how-tos of keeping your website up to date. He'll discuss Joomia, Plone, Drupal, and WordPress, using WordPress for his examples.

 You'll leave the meeting knowing:

— What a CMS is and how it can benefit you

— The top four CMS's

— Plugins/Addons for social media, marketing, multimedia and more.

— Tips for getting started and troubleshooting

 — Hosting requirements and Help Forums.

We'll also recognize ICA-member web designers who work with CMS.

Come and bring a friend. As always, networking and complimentary heavy hors d'oeuvres begin at 6:30 p.m. Jeff's presentation will be from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

ICA joins the Council for Entrepreneurial Development

ICA has joined the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs in the Research Triangle area. Every ICA member is a solopreneur who can benefit from the excellent educational and networking opportunities provided by CED. ICA provides a wealth of communication expertise to the entrepreneurs of CED.

ICA members can now enjoy the benefits of CED membership, including members-only pricing on CED programs, listing in the CED's online member directory, and the opportunity to share expertise by speaking at CED events or writing a guest column for a CED publication. As an association, ICA can benefit from CED's guidance in growing our organization and increasing awareness of our members' expertise in the entrepreneurial community.

New website offers one-stop shop for businesses seeking talented, independent communication professionals

Chapel Hill Watch Now Online

ICA member Nancy Oates partnered with longtime journalist Don Evans to launch Chapel Hill Watch (www.chapelhillwatch.wordpress.com), a blog about politics and business in Chapel Hill. The site posts an editorial or news item Monday through Friday, often expanding on topics brought up at Town Council meetings.

The site has garnered attention from WCHL news radio, The Daily Tar Heel and other blogs. By filling holes left by the diminishing resources of newspapers, the blog aims to keep residents informed of the town’s economic health, how taxpayer money is spent and policy decisions under consideration by town government.

“A town thrives on vigorous debate,” Oates said. “Chapel Hill Watch provides a platform for citizens to make their voices heard.”

Maria Mauriello's blog helps child with scoliosis

A post on Maria J. Mauriello's blog (www.mariatalksback.blogspot.com) recently sparked a radio interview for an Anderson Creek, N.C. family. The post, entitled "Scoliosis, Miss North Carolina and Emily," recounts the story of a 10-year-old girl (Emily) and her family's battle with their health insurance company to cover Emily's scoliosis treatment. After researching and writing the blog post, Mauriello pitched the story to WPTF (680-AM) radio in Raleigh as an illustration of the need for health care reform. Prior to the family's appearance, the radio station contacted the health insurance company and, although privacy concerns prohibited a representative from appearing on the program with Emily and her family, WPTF put Emily's mother in touch with another contact to appeal the thrice-rejected claim. Stay tuned for further developments.

Maria Mauriello writes cover story for Meredith magazine

In 2009, Meredith College's President, Maureen Hartford, is celebrating her tenth year at the school's helm. To help mark this milestone, the college hired ICA member Maria J. Mauriello (www.write2point.com) to write the cover story -- "A Decade of Progress" -- for the Summer 2009 issue of MEREDITH Magazine, its alumnae publication. The feature article details the numerous initiatives and programs Hartford has implemented during her tenure, including an increased emphasis on leadership skill development, diversity, and studying abroad.

ICA members work as virtual team to develop museum brochure

Triangle-based ICA members Libbie Hough (www.cmatters.org) and Cindy Turner (www.writestrategiesinc.com) recently worked from concept to completion on a brochure to promote the Orange County Historical Museum. Libbie provided project management and content, Cindy served as editor/consultant, and Alison Duncan (Oregon) created the design.

 
The clients were quite pleased with the results of this virtual team project. “We were excited by our brochure,” said Darcie Beecroft, Executive Director, Orange County Historical Museum. “It looks great and was done in a timely manner (even with working with a whole board!).”

Claire Doyle Ragin profiled in AIGA Raleigh Member Spotlight

The Raleigh chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design, chose Claire Doyle Ragin as the first designer to profile in their new member spotlight series. In her interview, Ragin cites her tenure as president of ICA as one of her proudest accomplishments.

Tracy Needham Starts Facebook Group for Solopreneurs

ICA Member Tracy Needham started a group on Facebook on February 18, 2009, called "Copywriting and Marketing for Solopreneurs". The group will serve as a platform for Tracy to host discussions and events as well as promote her teleseminars. 33 members have joined since its inception. The group will join Tracy's other web-based initiatives, including her website, her blog, and twitter.
